Urban area

Although Vietnam is aiming to fast urban development along with infrastructure and socio-economic improvement, in fact, implementing these objectives is not easy at all due to the asynchronous investment caused by the lack of urban infrastructure and insufficient traffic system. As a result, urban areas are suffering from traffic jam, environmental pollution, technical and social infrastructure degrading, etc, leading to the poor living quality.

To tackle these issues, many leading experts suggest to have green criterion for urban areas so as to develop green buildings in combination with energy efficiency which is indispensable for the sustainable development of the urban areas in Vietnam in the future. Therefore, the government should propose more incentives to promote green building. Mr. Yannick Millet, Executive Director of Vietnam Green Building Council also said that one of the most difficult problems in green building development in Vietnam is the limitation in the capital in technology innovation and policies supporting investment. In late 2012, the U.S. Embassy in collaboratation with the ministries, departments in Vietnam signed a MoU to launch clean energy program for Vietnam in the period of 2012-2017. In order to achieve the program results as expected, the Government of Vietnam should adopt policies to encourage and enhance the management capacity in regulation enforcement.
