Green Building Certification – Market Update September 2015

Green building certification continues to grow in Vietnam. In the last 12 months, 4 projects have completed the LOTUS certification system and 3 projects have received LEED certification. An additional 2 projects have registered for certification through LOTUS and a further 5 projects registered through LEED. Projects registered under LEED New Construction are all industrial development, with the two projects registered under LEED Core and Shell, being one commercial and one mixed use development. All LOTUS projects have been registered under LOTUS Non-Residential and are a mix of industrial and commercial.

In April, Fashion Garment factory Expansion in Tan Phu IP, Dong Nai Province, was certified LEED Platinum and became the first development in Vietnam to receive the highest certification under LEED. Meanwhile, Big C – Viet Tri received LOTUS Silver certification in May and becomes the fourth LOTUS Silver certified Big C project, with another Big C project already registered.

Notably, no new residential projects have registered under any certification system. In response to this, the VGBC is working to develop LOTUS Homes, specifically designed to offer a certification pathway for single dwelling units. This initiative will lead to increases in green certification in the residential market and ultimately sustainable urban development.
