Last week, the Vietnam Green Building Council (VGBC) partnered with Hanoi Architectural University, Institute of Tropical Architecture and USAID Vietnam Clean Energy Program to co-host the 2015 Green Architecture Week in Hanoi from 21-25 September.
The opening ceremony welcomed Party Secretary/ Principal/ Professor Le Quan, Mr Christopher Abrams – Director of Environment and Society Development Department, USAID; Ms Vu Thi Kim Thoa – Head of USAID Vietnam Consultant; Mr Dang Thanh Long – Director of VGBC and Mr Joseph J.Deringer – Consultant in Technique and Policy, USAID.
At the ceremony, The Green Architecture Awards were presented to students in Architecture and Planning Faculty who proposed design solutions aiming to sustainability, energy efficiency and nature preservation. The first prize went to Nguyen Quynh Trang for her project “The economic and ecologic area – A balance between economic and living standards in Hanoi Old Quarters” which was guided by PhD/ Architecture Huynh Thi Bao Chau.

Another highlight of The Green Architecture Week this year was the Women Champions Talk which focused mainly on the women’s role and contribution in construction industry. Mr Christopher Abrams – Director of Environment and Society Development Department USAID said “Gender equality and women champions are now the most important factors which directly influence on the sustainable development. In Vietnam, there are about 300.000 people working in construction field, 20% of them are women. That is an impressive figure. However, I still think Vietnam can do better…”
Running under the lead of three female architects: Professor/ PhD/ Architect Do To Lan, Architect Tran Thi Tuan Anh and Professor/ PhD/ Architect Luong Tu Quyen, the program also encouraged female students to study and get a better understanding of their future career opportunities.
Women Champions Talk – 2015 Green Architecture Week Hanoi
A remarkable event in this special week was the conference: “Glass material in design resolutions for energy efficiency” on 23 September. With lecturers as local and foreign experts, the attendees had a chance to learn theories and apply those in easy-to-difficult exercises.
The week ended successfully with an exhibition which introduced studies and projects in green solutions and sustainable development by the Institute of Tropical Architecture.
